Anza-Borrego's superbloom isn't an annual event. It depends on fall and winter rain, and some years it barely happens at all. That unpredictability is exactly why a lot of people assume they can decide at the last minute. The park's own reservation rules say otherwise.

Borrego Palm Canyon actually takes RVs, with real numbers attached

California State Parks confirms Borrego Palm Canyon Campground offers RV hookup sites at $45 per night, and that reservations are required October 1 through April 30. A shorter, dry-camping-only campground at Tamarisk Grove caps RVs at 21 feet with no hookups. Borrego Palm Canyon doesn't publish a stated maximum length on the same page, so confirm your specific unit's fit when you book rather than assuming a larger rig is automatically fine.

The collision: bloom season is reservation season

Superbloom conditions, when they happen, show up in the same October-through-April window the park requires reservations for. That means the exact stretch when you'd want to chase a bloom is the exact stretch when you can't just show up. Watch for bloom reports and have a flexible-date reservation ready before the news breaks, not after. Waiting until wildflower photos start circulating online means competing for a site against everyone else who had the same idea that morning.

What actually makes a superbloom happen, and how to check without guessing

The Anza-Borrego Foundation explains why the park's own reservation rules matter so much here: "a true super bloom requires a rare combination of conditions, including sustained rainfall over multiple months, cool nighttime temperatures, minimal heat spikes, and calm winds that allow seedlings to establish." A single wet week doesn't do it. Warm spells or strong wind can cut a promising bloom short even after the rain shows up. The Slot is a real place, not a marketing word

"Slot canyon" isn't a vague description here. California State Parks' own page names The Slot, in the Buttes Pass area, as a specific hiking destination with its own day-use parking fee. Borrego Palm Canyon Trail is a real 3-mile roundtrip hike from the campground road itself, $10 day-use parking, so a camper staying at the hookup sites doesn't need to drive anywhere to reach it. Hellhole Canyon is a third named trailhead with its own parking fee. None of these are inside the campground loop, so budget the day-use fee and the drive time separately from your camping reservation.

A different desert than Joshua Tree

Hwy 86 runs south out of the valley into a different ecosystem entirely, slot canyons and spring wildflowers instead of Joshua Tree's boulder fields and Mojave yuccas. If your trip is genuinely about the bloom rather than a general desert-camping weekend, don't default to the Joshua Tree page. Joshua Tree town vs. the national park is a different trip with a different reservation system.

Book the rig and the site together

A superbloom weekend is exactly when marketplace inventory in the valley gets tight too, since it overlaps ordinary spring travel demand. La Quinta is the closer staging point than driving from the village, and Salton Sea is a reasonable add-on stop on the same run south.
